Mo. county fighting over transfer of prisoners

CARTHAGE, Mo. (AP) - A southwest Missouri sheriff and county commission are feuding over overcrowding at the county jail.

Sheriff Archie Dunn said transfers of inmates began late Tuesday and continued on Wednesday. Dunn says the jail has been exceeding its capacity of 80 inmates per day for months.

The commission responded Wednesday by notifying Dunn that the county will not condone nor pay for the transfers, and warned the sheriff that he might be required to personally pay for the transfers.

He told commissioners on Tuesday that they had not provided a safe jail. He asked that they appoint a group to address jail problems and begin discussing a new jail.

The Joplin Globe reports that Dunn says the county would pay $40 to $50 per day for inmates at other jails.
