Mid-Missouri lawmakers share redistricting thoughts

During Friday's House debate, Rep. Stephen Webber, D-Columbia, argued: "Central Missouri deserves its own congressional district (and) this map does not do central Missouri justice."

Rep. Jay Barnes, R-Jefferson City, agrees.

But a map with a Jefferson City-Columbia based Mid-Missouri district would get only 30 votes in the House, he said - 53 fewer than needed for passage.

"It would get all the votes of the people in Mid-Missouri, but nowhere else," he said. "I'm not voting for the Senate's map, under any circumstances. ...

"The Senate map is completely unfair to Mid-Missouri, and it essentially strips us of (congressional) representation."
