Cole County commits funds to Lafayette Street project

The Cole County Commission has agreed to move forward with an acceleration plan that could bring construction of the Lafayette Street interchange to fruition in two years.

During a Wednesday meeting with Roger Schwartze, MoDOT District 5 engineer, commissioners said they would join Jefferson City in committing funds.

Similar to what was done on the joint project to get an interchange at the new St. Mary’s Health Center location ....

Not much point in building a nice high speed overpass when the rest of the expressway toward town is clogged with stoplights! What is it...4 or 5 blocks away?

Money wasted.

I'm not sure what a high speed overpass is?? But this is going to be a great way to connect to the prison development.

Accelerated does not mean high speed. It means it will be constructed earlier than it was scheduled for. Construction inflation will be avoided, and we'll get to use the interchange much earlier than we would have otherwise. They'll be using $16.1 million of MoDOT's money with only $450,000 in local money. That's 2.8% of the total.

Smart move, commissioners--and thank you!

The new interchange will help--a lot. It will provide easy access to Jefferson City High School, Trinity Lutheran School, Helias High School, Downtown and the MSP site. Once the interchange is in place, people going to those locations won't be stuck on those stoplights.

I drive up Lafayette every day. It will be nice to be able to get onto 50 there, instead of having to cut up a side street to get to Madison or Clark. It will certainly be quicker and easier for people to get to Lincoln or the high school. Other than that, I'm not sure it's all that necessary. I think the Dunklin/Clark intersection is in more need of attention...it's just kind of a weird set-up.

JC is not the most motorist friendly city is it? too bad the insterstate highway does not go through JC.

Dunklin/Clark is not a MoDOT road. MoDOT's money is by far and away the largest chunk of funds for the interchange project.

I think one at the Dunklin/Clark intersection would be a good idea, but I really can't imagine why they need a second one, I'm assuming at the intersection there next to 50.

Roundabouts are in vogue now. Long term, they're cheaper than lights, move more traffic through an area quicker and experience less severe (but not fewer) accidents.

They are best used when at least two roads/streets intersect in close proximity. You'll note just about all of them have at least 4 "legs" on them.
