Missouri Senate approves ethics law fix
Wednesday, April 20, 2011
The Missouri Senate has approved legislation that would allow any corporation to donate to political action committees.
It’s designed to fix part of a law that was struck down by a circuit court last month. A campaign finance law passed last year barred state-chartered banks from donating to political action committees. A judge ruled that restrictions violated the constitutional rights of the banks and the law contained too many subjects.
The Senate voted 32-0 on Tuesday to allow all corporations to donate. But senators made changes from the version approved earlier by the House. The legislation now goes back to the House.
Besides campaign finance, the bill also would allow political candidates to buy tickets, meals and advertising from political committees.
