Two Cole County towns defend past annexations

The Jefferson City Council has some questions about the way their neighbors have annexed surrounding areas. But those neighbors are asking why the city is raising the questions.
At Monday night’s City Council work session, Joseph Lauber, of the Lee’s Summit-based Lauber Municipal Law, LLC, presented his findings about annexations for Taos and St. Martins. In both instances, Lauber said the annexations may not meet the requirements set out by the Missouri state statutes concerning annexations.
But officials from both towns dispute that concern and claim that the annexations were voluntarily requested by property owners.

Could this be nothing but greed?

Greed? Maybe but in a town full of obsessive-compulsive control freaks, greed is not usually the primary motivator for city council action.

Oh c'mon folks in the outlying areas, you know you want some roundabouts. Deep down you really want to help pay for the convention-conference center, Adrian's Peninsula, the mud tunnel and the revitalization of old town. C'mon, help a neighbor out.

Those people like our roundabouts so much, they come in and use ours. Where would you put one in Taos, though? That's a linear city, two miles long and half a block wide. It would take some creative work to put one there. St. Martins could use a couple of them.

Looks to me like some landowners were worried about Jefferson City attempting to annex them, so they petitioned Taos or St. Martins to annex them first.
Now Jefferson City officials are up in arms, which tells me that the landowners were right. The only reason I can see why JC would be concerned at all is that they're mad that this land was "stolen" from them.

Taos and St. Martins should join together and hire Johnny Cochran to take a look at the way Jefferson City Council has annexed the areas all around the Rock Quarry between Stadium and 179, but they did not annex the rock quarry itself. Seems to be something going on with this that borders on abuse, favoritism, kickbacks, or other improprieties.
Why JC would go poking its nose in what other cities are doing is plain crazy, but spending our tax dollars to hire big-dollar out of town lawyers for this kind of witch-hunt is even more nutty.
The lame excuse Landwhere gave about outdated St. Martins maps was totally embarassing for our city. He could have easily gone to the cole county website to see the current boundries like everyone else can.
What a bunch of incompetent but transparently crooked and petty people we have elected to run this town!

Look at who ever sells fireworks there on the corner come late June... Ask them how much they had to pay the crooks in JC to keep it out.
This is so funny, how s*tupid does JC think the rest of us are, they're so transparent.

the people have spoken and voted for these people on the council, but the question remains...why??
Taos and St. Martins should should beg to join JC, if JC is so great. heh

Most of Apache Flats wants to be annexed by St.Martins including the Hotels. City of Jefferson attorney threatened to stop sewer access if this happened.

How many of you have had an actual conversation with any of the city's elected officials or worked firsthand on any of the issues facing our community to create a well-informed opinion rather than making judgment calls based on limited facts? When was the last time you went to a city hall meeting and did you attend one of the recent candidate forums held in the council chambers to ask questions? If you don't like the way city government operates please run for office and make a real difference rather than spreading unnecessary negativity on the internet.
Many of the communities adjacent to Jefferson City use and depend on city services such as schools, sewer, water, police, fire, etc. Those services cost money and the people that use them should pay for it.

Why is the city wasting my tax dollars to provide services to people who live outside the city limits? That is DUMB DUMB DUMB.

Just to clarify who provides services outside the city... Schools aren't city services; they're services from school districts which encompass more than the city or towns. Water is provided by various public water supply districts. (Inside the city, it's not a municipal service anyway.) Law enforcement is provided by the county. Fire protection is by various fire districts. And sewer, the one thing the city does go outside city limits in some areas like Westview Heights to provide, is paid for by user fees. The city was pulled into that situation 20-some years ago at the behest of DNR after the Grey's Creek Sewer District went into receivership. --Rick Brown, online editor, News Tribune

Those services cost money, and the people that use them DO pay for it.
Sewer and water are a monthly bill that they pay.
Schools are paid for by property taxes, that they pay.
Law enforcement is by the Sherrif's department, paid for by sales and property taxes that they pay...
