Monday's National League Capsules

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Clayton Kershaw shut down the Giants again with his big-breaking curveball, Rod Barajas homered and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat San Francisco 6-1 on Monday night when players from both teams denounced violence in the rivalry.

Kershaw (2-1) struck out seven, walked two and gave up six hits in 6 2-3 innings, and he hasn't allowed a run over his last 23 2-3 innings against the Giants. That includes seven scoreless innings on opening day and a complete game last Sept. 14 at AT&T Park.

Andre Ethier had a pair of run-scoring singles and Matt Kemp also had an RBI single in the Dodgers' four-run fifth against Madison Bumgarner (0-2), started by Barajas' drive to left-center for his second homer of the year.

Pat Burrell broke up Los Angeles' shutout bid with a solo homer against Mike MacDougal leading off the ninth that hit the left-field foul pole.

Reds 3, Padres 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Chris Heisey hit a two-run homer and Jonny Gomes added a solo shot, and Cincinnati spoiled the season debut of Padres ace Mat Latos.

Latos had been on the disabled list with a sore right shoulder. He lost his sixth straight start dating to September.

The homers got Edinson Volquez (2-0) off the hook after another rough first inning. He allowed two runs, making it nine combined in the opening inning in his first three starts. Volquez allowed only one more hit in the next five innings. He finished with five strikeouts and two walks.

Latos (0-1) started strongly with five strikeouts in his first three innings. He got out of a first-inning jam when he struck out Gomes to strand runners on first and second.

Cardinals 8, Diamondbacks 2

PHOENIX (AP) - Kyle McClellan got his first major-league win as a starter and drove in two runs with a pair of hits.

Lance Berkman hit two home runs and Jon Jay added a pinch-hit homer for St. Louis.

McClellan (1-0) made it through six innings allowing a run on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

The Diamondbacks came back in their half of the fourth with a run off McClellan. Young doubled and came home two batters later on a single by Melvin Mora. Arizona had runners on first and second with one out in the fourth before starter Barry Enright (0-1) grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Cubs 5, Astros 4

HOUSTON (AP) - Starlin Castro, Darwin Barney and Marlon Byrd combined for seven hits, five runs and three RBIs.

Castro had three hits and scored three runs, Byrd drove in a pair of runs and Barney hit an RBI triple as the Cubs jumped on the Astros early, building a 5-0 lead by the fourth inning. Alfonso Soriano drove in two runs with a double in the first.

Closer Carlos Marmol got the last four outs to help the Cubs to the win and give him his fourth save. Ryan Dempster (1-2) got his first win of the season, allowing four runs in 6 1-3 innings.

Houston starter Nelson Figueroa (0-2) allowed eight hits and five runs in four innings.

Rockies 7, Mets 6

NEW YORK (AP) - Troy Tulowitzki homered and drove in three runs, and Carlos Gonzalez also had three RBIs.

Tulowitzki made a terrific jump throw from shortstop to preserve a seventh-inning tie and Seth Smith reached base four times, including on a triple and a double. The Rockies improved to 7-2, with the only two losses coming in extra innings, to match the best nine-game start in franchise history.

Jason Hammel pitched six respectable innings and Colorado took the opener of a four-game series, winning its third straight road game. The Rockies are 4-1 away from Coors Field after going 31-50 on the road last year.

Huston Street worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save in five chances. Matt Belisle (2-0) got the final two outs in the seventh, with some help from Tulowitzki.

Dexter Fowler singled off Bobby Parnell (0-1) to open the eighth and moved to third on a sacrifice and a wild pitch. Gonzalez hit a comebacker and Parnell had a good chance to get Fowler at the plate, but he threw over the head of catcher Josh Thole.
