Former US Rep Ed Case running for Senate in 2012

HONOLULU (AP) - Former U.S. Rep. Ed Case of Hawaii says he is running for the U.S. Senate in 2012.

Case said in a news release Sunday that he'll seek the seat of retiring Daniel Akaka, who beat Case for the Democratic nomination in 2006.

Case served in Congress from 2002 until 2006, when he left for the unsuccessful Senate bid. Last year he sought to return to the House, but finished third in a May special election.

Others who may seek the Senate seat are U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono, former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann and Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz.
