Arrest made in California man's death

Officers with the Missouri Highway Patrol arrested a suspect in connection with the death of a California, Mo., man.

Sgt. Paul Reinsch confirmed Jon Shikles, 26, California, was taken into custody around 7 p.m. Friday and has been charged with second-degree murder for the death of Travis Higgins, 31, of California.

"After going back and talking to witnesses and following up on all of the leads that came in, that led us to Mr. Shikles," Reinch said.

Higgins' body was discovered Thursday morning near the town square in the Moniteau County community by contractors who were going to work on a nearby house. He was found wearing soiled, torn sweat pants, a T-shirt and jacket.

According to initial reports, the victim was believed to have died not long before the body was found. An official cause of death is still unknown, pending the results of an autopsy, which will be performed in Columbia.

Rieinch said Shikles is currently the only suspect in Higgins' death.

"Investigators are going to continue looking into any other information they may have, but at this time, I do not foresee another arrest," Reinch said.
