SIKESTON, Mo. (AP) - People buying certain cold medicines in one southeast Missouri town will continue to need prescriptions for their purchases.
The city of Sikeston adopted a law requiring prescriptions for medicines containing pseudoephedrine (soo-doh-eh-FEHD'-rihn) last April, on a one-year trial basis. The goal was to make it harder for people to get the drug, which is a decongestant but also a key ingredient in methamphetamine.
This week, the City Council voted to make the law permanent.
The Sikeston Standard-Democrat reports that public safety officials presented figures showing busts of meth labs and meth-related arrests have dropped in the city since the law was adopted. Those officials say the city's meth problem hasn't been wiped out completely, but the illegal drug's prevalence has declined.
