Carter County sheriff arrested on drug charges

VAN BUREN, Mo. (AP) - The sheriff of southeast Missouri's Carter County has been locked up on drug-related charges.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said in a news release Sunday that 31-year-old Tommy L. Adams, of Ellsinore, was arrested Saturday on a felony charge of distribution, delivery, manufacture or production of a controlled substance.

The release said Adams' arrest is the result of an investigation by the patrol as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Missouri attorney general's office, the Missouri Division of Fire Safety and the Carter County prosecuting attorney's office.

The release says the investigation is ongoing.

Sgt. Marty Elmore, of the patrol, says he can't say where Adams is being held and that he didn't know whether he had an attorney.
