Prosecutor reviewing St. Joseph officer's death

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) -- A county prosecutor is reviewing what authorities have called the accidental, fatal shooting of a St. Joseph police officer by a fellow officer.

Buchanan County Prosecutor Dwight Scroggins told station KQTV on Wednesday he wants to make sure the shooting of 35-year-old Officer Dan De Kraai was nothing more than an accident.

De Kraai was shot by fellow Officer Jason Strong following a training session Sept. 15.

An investigation by St. Joseph police found that De Kraai asked Strong to shoot him with a round of the simulated training ammunition so he could learn how it felt.

But Strong didn't realize the gun he used contained live ammunition.

Scroggins says the investigation was turned over to his office this week. He's reviewing it for recklessness or negligence in the shooting.
