Suspect in shooting, police chase charged

The man believed to be involved with a shooting and police chase Thursday night on Jefferson City's east side is in custody and was charged Tuesday.

Prosecutors charged Jerry L. White Jr., 26, of 2109-B Louis Drive, with first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest.

According to police reports, the incident began around 10:19 p.m. Thursday when officers were called to the 1200 block of East McCarty Street to investigate a report of shots being fired from a vehicle.

The victim called police on her cell phone and identified White as the suspect.

She said he had brandished a handgun in the 800 block of East Elm Street, and that the two had gone to the 1200 block of East McCarty where White opened fire at her.

The victim said White fired at her six or more times.

Officers located the vehicle White was riding in on Eastland Drive, and attempted to stop it in the 2200 block of Timber Road.

White fled on foot, running into a wooded area.

As officers pursued White, police said he fired two shots from a handgun.

Eventually, police officers were joined by Cole County sheriff's deputies and Missouri Highway Patrol troopers to establish a perimeter and conduct a search, but White was not found that night.

Bond was set at $350,000. No court date has been scheduled.
