Police stress Halloween safety

In an effort to make Halloween safer, The Jefferson City Police Department will have extra officers working tonight. The additional officers along with patrol officers will be especially watchful in residential neighborhoods watching for hazardous driving.

Police said parents driving from house to house on Halloween should ensure everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seat belt. It also urges parents to remind children of how to properly cross the street and to walk on the sidewalk whenever possible. Police recommend children wear reflective clothing, carry a flashlight and be escorted by a parent.

The department reminds motorists to slow down and watch for children walking on roads, medians and curbs and watch for children darting out from in between parked vehicles.

Police said if you are going to consume alcohol, to designate a driver or call Sober Driver at 636-7102.
