Hannibal-LaGrange becomes university

HANNIBAL, Mo. (AP) - Hannibal-LaGrange students will be attending a new university, effective immediately.

After a vote on Tuesday at the Missouri Baptist Convention in Springfield, Hannibal-LaGrange College officially became Hannibal-LaGrange University.

President Woodrow Burt says college trustees wanted to change the name because the institution had added programs, including a master of science and education degree. And he says the private university is considering adding more programs.

HLG opened in LaGrange in 1858 as the LaGrange Male and Female Seminary. It moved to its 110-acre campus in Hannibal in 1928 and became Hannibal-LaGrange College.

The university has 1,200 students from 30 countries and 27 states.
