YOUR OPINION: Amendment 2 approval urged

Dear Editor:

We urge the voters of Missouri to approve Amendment 2 appearing on the November ballot. This amendment exempts former prisoners of war who are 100 percent totally disabled from real estate taxes on their homesteads. These are mostly World War II prisoners but include veterans who served in any of our wars including Korea, Vietnam and more recent conflicts.

It is estimated that approximately 140 former POWs that are 100 percent totally disables would be eligible. This small number of veterans in this category are deserving of passage of this amendment. Most WW II veterans are well into the 80 age group and are passing on fast. It is noteworthy that the bill authorizing this amendment to go on the ballot, HJR-15, was passed unanimously by all committees and both the Missouri Senate and House of Representatives with no dissenting votes.

We hope the voters will honor these people and vote to pass Amendment 2 on Nov. 2.
