Missouri doctor to pay $720K to settle claims

UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A St. Louis-area doctor has agreed to pay $720,000 to settle claims that he overbilled Medicare.

The U.S. Attorney's Office announced the settlement Friday.

Dr. Christopher Creighton had been accused of overbilling Medicare for various procedures performed since 2003.

The agreement said that Creighton did not admit the government claims and that both sides settled the case to avoid "protracted litigation."

One of Creighton's lawyers, Evan Reid, said the problems were the result of billing errors made by a third party billing service used by Dr. Creighton's practice. Reid said Dr. Creighton cooperated with the government and agreed to repay money that his practice had received from Medicare because of the errors.
