OUR OPINION: Voter registration deadline Wednesday

Who do you want to be your new U.S. senator? Do you want to retain or replace your representative in Congress? Are you in favor of new, statewide restrictions on dog breeders? Would you like to prohibit smoking in Jefferson City restaurants and bars?

Those are among the races and issues to be decided in the Nov. 2 general election. But eligible voters who are not registered must to do so by Wednesday.

In Cole County, eligible voters may register in person before 5 p.m. Wednesday at the county clerk's office in the Courthouse Annex Building, 311 E. High St. The annex is between the county courthouse and the Missouri River Regional Library.

They also may download a voter registration form at www.GoVoteMissouri.com and mail it to their local election authority. Mailed applications must be postmarked no later than Wednesday.

Missing the voter registration deadline is not uncommon, according to the Missouri secretary of state's office.

The office cites U.S. Census Bureau figures estimating more than 5 million voters nationwide did not cast ballots in November 2006 because they missed their states' registration deadline.

We routinely encourage voters to become informed about candidates and ballot issues, then participate in the electoral process.

But a necessary component is proper voter registration.

The deadline looms.
