Mingo refuge adds 2nd managed deer hunt

PUXICO, Mo. (AP) - The Mingo National Wildlife Refuge plans to offer two managed deer hunts this year instead of one.

The Southeast Missourian reports that the annual muzzleloader hunt is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. That event will involve 165 registered hunters including five with disabilities.

The first youth muzzleloader hunt will take place Dec. 11 and 12, with 50 registered hunters.

In recent years, more than 2,000 hunters have applied every year for managed hunts at the Mingo refuge in southeast Missouri. The Missouri Department of Conservation, which runs the hunts, says the youth hunting event was added to increase interest in hunting and to help balance the deer population in the refuge.
