Penney downs Maplewood to earn Class 2 crown

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Trevor Dixon rushed for three touchdowns and 189 yards to lead Penney High to a 34-13 victory over Maplewood-Richmond Heights in the Class 2 state championship game.

Penney (15-0), located in Hamilton, Mo., which won the Class 1 championship last season, is the first school to win back-to-back titles in different classifications.

Maplewood (14-1) was making its first appearance in a state title game Saturday.

Penney jumped out to a 13-0 lead four minutes into the game. Maplewood rallied to tie the game on a 3-yard run by Austyn Ford with 8:45 left in the third quarter.

Dixon scored on a 1-yard run with 2:50 left in the third quarter to break the 13-13 tie after setting up the score with an 86-yard run.
