Highway Patrol says suspect killed himself

CREIGHTON, Mo. (AP) - The Missouri Highway Patrol says a 23-year-old burglary suspect shot and killed himself as troopers approached him in an armored vehicle on a rural road.

An autopsy was planned Wednesday on the suspect, identified as Rick A. Gregory from the west-central Missouri town of Calhoun.

The patrol says the showdown was set in motion around 10 p.m. Tuesday when troopers were asked to help chase a burglary suspect in Missouri's Johnson County. The pursuit continued into Henry County, where the man's vehicle broke near the town of Creighton.

The patrol says the suspect opened fire at a trooper, hitting his windshield. The trooper returned fire and ran for cover.

According to the patrol, the suspect refused to leave his vehicle and shot himself as a SWAT team approached in an armored vehicle.
