Jefferson City police announce ‘Click It or Ticket’
Wednesday, November 17, 2010
The Jefferson City Police Department announced Tuesday it is joining with law enforcement from around the state Nov. 18th for an aggressive “Click it or Ticket” mobilization to crack down on Missouri’s safety belt law violators and to reduce highway fatalities.
Failure to regularly wear a safety belt can be deadly. In 2009, 425 people killed in traffic crashes weren’t wearing their seat belt. Seven out of 10 Missourians killed in traffic crashes were unbuckled.
Nearly one in four Missouri motorists fail to regularly wear their seat belt in a motor vehicle. Only 76 percent of Missourians buckle up regularly, 8 percent less than the national average of 84 percent.

It would be nice if they (LE) would also concentrate on ticketing more drivers riding around holding their cell phones to their ears, talking. I thought the law changed that you have to use your phone with a bluetooth so that you are using your phone handsfree. I sure don't see that law being enforced. On any given day, I see at least 10 to 12 drivers riding around with their cells practically glued to the sides of their faces. If I can see it, why can't more LEO's see it?

It's not against the law to be on a cell and drive in Missouri. The only thing against the law is texting while driving and only if you are under 21 years old.
Personally I will admit I do talk and drive and have been doing so for ten or more years with not even one close call or one accident. Talking on the phone does not distract me from driving any more than talking to someone in the car riding next to me. That being said the people who can't handle it are the ones who are simply bad drivers period. The ones who can't drive even when they are NOT on their phones because they lack the skills of being highly observant to what is going on with around them.
How funny it said I typed "a s s" and wouldn't let me p ost the comment as originally typed without spaces or changing the word b/c of the word "p/a /s/senger" - thats one heck of a filter you got here NT. Then I spent ten minutes trying to figure out what “p-s” means in this “Watch your mouth! The words "p-s" are not allowed here” WTH?

Yeah, I did a little research and found that out, JCG, but it SHOULD be against the law. I'm glad that you have the capabilities to drive while you talk on your phone, but I've had too many close calls from those drivers that talk on the phone, text, and pick their noses...everything BUT drive. I wish them few drivers that nearly hit me had your skills, then the (MY) world would be a better place.

I'm not saying that one cannot use their cell phone, but that they have to use a handsfree device, right? I believe that I heard that on the local news a while back.

HB 26 and HB 92 are simply not scheduled on the calendar. But they should be!

I'm against these laws. I buckle up every time I get into the car, but if you're too stupid to, IMO that's your problem and not the cops'. I'm a big fan of natural selection. Children riding in the car should be required by law to be buckled up, with a ticket going to the parents if they're not. Just my two cents.
P.S. Webmaster - this profanity filter has got to go. I just tried to use the word p---engers, with the three blanked out letters spelling another word for derriere, and it kept kicking it out. Took me ten minutes to figure out what was wrong.

I am working on it. The new filter works way differently than the old one. My apologies and thanks for your patience. Anyone else that runs into that problem, let me know webmaster@newstribune.com.

Also how does click it or ticket work in a state without a primary seatbelt law? I thought they couldn't pull you over simply for not wearing one? So how much does this campaign really help if they have to catch you doing something else illegal first? Seems like a waste of money.

Darn it Joe! Guess I better leave my 'doo-rag' at home the next time I go driving. Don't wanna get 'profiled'! ha ha ha

They can try to give me a ticket for not wearing my seatbelt but they have to catch me first!

Are you implying that you SPEED, sillyrabbit? You got a turbo boost in that car of yours? If so, I want to go for a spin. Then we can take law enforcement on a high speed, tri-county chase! Then everyone will be commenting about us in here...All bad, of course!
