Poker tournament to raise funds for Special Olympics

Two local Polar Plunge veterans, Phil Farris and Randy Schmutz, are hosting a poker tournament in Jefferson City to raise money for the 2011 Polar Plunge Super Plunge for Special Olympics Missouri.

The Texas Hold'em tournament begins with registration at 6 p.m. Dec. 4 at Elks Lodge on Ellis Boulevard. Poker begins at 7 p.m.

Participants will pay $40 to play and winners will receive 49 percent of the proceeds. The number of winners will depend on the number of players.

Snacks and a cash bar will be available. Smoking will be permitted in the lodge clubroom or outside only.

The plunge is Feb. 26 at Public Beach No. 2, Lake of the Ozarks. Super plunge participants must raise $2,500 each to participate, plunging 24 times in 24 hours. If the men don't raise the minimum, they will participate in the traditional Polar Plunge (minimum of $75 in donations) with additional donations to Special Olympics Missouri.

In addition to participating in the tournament, individuals, organizations and businesses can donate via the participant pages on the Special Olympics Missouri site: Farris (somo.org/farrisfreezin) Schmutz (somo.org/shiveringschmutz).
