Head shop comes to Jefferson City

Counterculture makes debut in town

Columbia has them. So does Lake of the Ozarks. But there's one type of business that Jefferson City may have never attracted until recently: a head shop.

The term comes from the '60s, and refers to a shop that sells counterculture merchandise, including items that could be used as drug paraphernalia.

'60s Spirit, which opened Aug. 18 next to Little Caesar's Pizza on Missouri Boulevard, sells tie-dyed T-shirts, novelty items, tapestries, patches, stickers, "funky clothes," incense and "body cleansers." It also features a "smoke shack" that sells various pipes and water pipes, the latter of which are commonly called "bongs" by marijuana smokers who use them.
