Law day action

Cole County Judge Paul Wilson recently sentenced a Jefferson City man to five years in prison for pleading guilty to assault and burglary charges. Kurt Pavitt, 33, 1204 Grandview Court, was charged with first-degree burglary, seconddegree assault of a law officer and resisting arrest. Authorities believe Pavitt broke into a residence in the 4700 block of Old Lohman Road around 10:45 p.m. Feb. 27, stealing a Porter Cable air compressor and assaulting a deputy as he was being taken into custody.

In other recent court action, Judge Wilson:

  • Placed a Linn woman on five years supervised probation for pleading guilty to possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Angela Schaefer, 29, was charged in June 2009.
  • Revoked the probation of a Jefferson City man and sentenced him to five years prison. Douglas Miles Jr., 23, 910 Justus St., had pleaded guilty to a February 2007 charge of selling cocaine.
  • Placed a Columbia man on five years supervised probation for pleading guilty to a November 2002 charge of passing a bad check. Christopher Lane, 29, must pay $300 per month to pay off a total of $16,560 in restitution.

Cole County Presiding Judge Pat Joyce recently placed a Russellville man on five years unsupervised probation for pleading guilty to failing to file state sales-tax returns and to pay sales tax.

According to court records, Justin Simmons, 30, president and operator of Apache Muffler and Auto Service Inc. located on West Business 50, failed to file sales-tax returns and failed to pay sales tax for four quarterly periods, ending Sept. 30, 2005, through June 30, 2006.

Simmons must pay $11,733.40 in restitution with monthly payments of $250 and report back to the court at 9 a.m. June 8, 2011.

Cole County Senior Judge Byron Kinder recently sentenced an Auxvasse man to 10 years in prison for pleading guilty to selling cocaine. Larry Peoples, 43, was charged in June 2008.

Judge Kinder also sentenced a Belle man to three years in prison for stealing a vehicle in Jefferson City in June. Ray Kitchen, 22, took the vehicle from a residence in the 700 block of Hobbs Terrace, and it was recovered in Gasconade County.
