Family claims neglect in St. Louis jail death

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Relatives of a woman who was found unresponsive in the St. Louis jail and died at a hospital are questioning the care she received.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports 37-year-old Vanessa Evans died Friday while in custody on outstanding city ordinance violations. She was awaiting a probation hearing.

Officials say Evans was having trouble breathing in her jail cell the previous night, hours before she was found unresponsive on the floor. She later died at a hospital.

The city's corrections chief says after Evans complained of breathing problems, she was allowed to walk outside her cell at least twice to get some air.

Toxicology tests are pending.

Evans' family says jail officials should have known of her ongoing medical issues because she had been there before.
