It may not have been the most appealing topic to discuss around the water cooler, but that did not stop Jefferson City residents from passing a $35 million sewer bond issue Tuesday night with 79 percent of the vote.

The seven-year bond issue, which is the second part of a three-phase plan, passed by a vote of 9,463-2,515. The plan will help the city address several issues with the sewer system, including the replacement of sewers and reduction of infiltration and inflow, which cause sanitary sewer overflows and backups.

With the passage of the bond issue, residents will see a seven-year increase of the average bill from $21 to $30.
