Rescue shelter destroyed by fire

COLLINS, Mo. (AP) - An animal rescue shelter in southwest Missouri was destroyed by fire, but all the animals housed there were saved.

The fire hit the Halfway Home Animal Rescue near Collins on Monday. A cause has not been determined. The shelter, which was completed in May, lost all its cages, supplies and other equipment.

Latichia Duffy, who runs Halfway Home, estimated the damage at $50,000. She says she doesn't know when the rescue group would be able to take in animals again. It is currently looking for homes for 20 small dogs.

Halfway Home has helped rescue more than 1,000 animals this year. More than 300 of the animals were adopted, with the rest transferred to rescue agencies across the United States and Canada.
