Judge rules against New Life shelter at former fed building

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - A judge has ruled against New Life Evangelistic Center's effort to convert a former southeast Missouri federal building into a homeless shelter.

The Southeast Missourian website reported Monday that the ruling this month turned down New Life's challenge of a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services decision against using the Cape Girardeau building to house the homeless.

It wasn't clear if New Life would appeal. Director Larry Rice did not respond to interview requests.

Cape Girardeau County authorities are interested in acquiring the property to replace the Common Pleas Courthouse.
