Man accused of pinching cash for trash haulers

CHESTERFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Police in a St. Louis suburb believe they've caught the thief who's been stealing holiday cash and gift cards intended for trash haulers.

The 43-year-old man was arrested Thursday. Police in Chesterfield say he's a former trash hauler himself.

Police Lt. Steve Lewis told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the man is suspected of stealing hundreds of dollars and possessing unopened gift cards that residents placed in envelopes attached to the lids of trash cans.

Residents provided a description of the thief and his vehicle. Officers recovered some of the stolen money, but Chesterfield residents were being urged to make sure their trash haulers received their intended gifts.

Charges against the suspected thief are pending.
