Callaway County prosecutor looking for new way to supplement salaries

Fund previously covered by bad-check fees, but fewer writing checks

For the past 10 years, Callaway County Prosecuting Attorney Bob Sterner has worked to supplement the pay for his assistant prosecuting attorneys by using a fund paid with a fee collected for bad checks.

Now, with fewer people writing checks and more people using debit cards, the fund is starting to dry up.

Sterner said there has been optimism from the county commission on finding the funds to pay the extra salary, but he is cautiously optimistic.
