Your Opinion: Wrestling with coach's strategy

Dear Editor:

Jefferson City is fortunate to have two historically outstanding academic and athletic high schools in JCHS and Helias. Year in and out each will have fleeting opportunities to boast athletic victories over the other.

On Dec. 15 the wrestling squads met and once again it was both highly competitive and exciting. As pointed out by sports writer Tom Rackers there was also some disgruntlement related to strategy.

Coach Reinsch was upset that one of his senior wrestlers won by forfeit instead of being provided an opponent. He then stated that he has always put a wrestler on the mat against the Jays, “even if it was just a JV guy.”

In 2005, my son, Dow, a senior at JCHS walked off the wrestling mat a winner by forfeit in the dual with Coach Reinsch’s team. His decision to do that was wrong but it no longer drives me nuts.
