An eastern Missouri man wants voters to decide whether to bar personal property taxes on vehicles, farm machinery and manufactured homes.
Richard LaViolette, of Fenton, has proposed a ballot question to amend the state constitution and ban personal property taxes. He says they're a nuisance and people cannot really own their property if a tax is levied upon it.
The secretary of state's office on Monday approved a ballot summary. Supporters may now begin collecting signatures to put the question to a statewide vote in 2012.
Officials estimate abolishing the tax could cost state and local governments more than $1 billion per year.
