Kansas City police say a man abandoned his young son at a bus stop in freezing weather for a purported trip to California.
A woman saw the 6-year-old boy get out of a pickup late Tuesday afternoon. The truck drove off, and the woman put the boy in her vehicle and called police.
The Kansas City Star reports the boy said his father could no longer take care of him, so he would go live with his mother in California. The child packed some clothes and was dropped off with papers he was told were a bus ticket.
The 34-year-old father was arrested after calling police about an hour later to report his child missing. Police say the man reported his truck broke down and he told the boy to wait at the bus stop.
