Auditor says Willard can't pay for new pool

WILLARD, Mo. (AP) - State Auditor Susan Montee says a southwest Missouri town's financial records are so unorganized that she can't be sure if all its money was spent correctly.

And Montee told about 70 people in Willard Tuesday that city officials don't seem interested in working together. She conducted the audit after more than 500 people signed a petition seeking the review.

The auditor says the city can't afford to pay for a pool it opened last year. And Montee found problems in payroll, utility controls and compliance with the Sunshine Law.

Mayor Jamie Schoolcraft told The Springfield News-Leader that the city has already made many of the changes Montee suggested.
