US Sen. McCaskill calls for spending caps

WASHINGTON (AP) - Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill wants Congress to place limits on increases in federal spending.

The Democratic senator told reporters Tuesday she won't vote for a proposed federal budget unless it has annual caps on how much Congress can appropriate. She says it's important for lawmakers to show financial discipline.

McCaskill has proposed capping annual budget increases by an average of 1.7 percent for defense and 1 percent for non-military items for the next several years. The proposal is supported by a Republican senator from Alabama.

The cap would not apply to funding for military action authorized by Congress. The limits could be waived for emergencies, natural disasters or terrorist attacks if approved by Congress.
