Helias, Tipton ranked in final football polls

Two area teams finished among the top 10 in their respective classes in the final high school state football rankings.

In the rankings released this morning, the Helias Crusaders ended No. 4 in the Class 4 poll.

The Crusaders (7-5) won their fourth straight district title this season and defeated Carthage in the regional round before falling to eventual state champion Webb City 35-21 in the sectional. That was the closest game Webb City had in the playoffs and it marked the fourth straight season Helias was eliminated in the playoffs by the eventual state champion.

Webb City was No. 1 in the final rankings, followed by Harrisonville and Kearney.

Helias was ranked No. 8 in the final regular-season poll.

The Tipton Cardinals ended No. 6 in the final Class 1 rankings.

The Cardinals (11-1) routed Santa Fe in the regional round of the playoffs before falling 28-14 to Concordia in the sectional. Concordia, No. 3 in the final rankings, advanced to the semifinals.

Tipton was No. 2 in the final regular-season poll.

South Callaway was the only other area team to receive votes in the final poll. The Bulldogs (10-2), who won their first football district title this season, received six points in the Class 2 poll.
