River advocate in Missouri wins honor

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A Kansas City woman has won an international award for her efforts to clean up the Blue River and the Missouri River.

The state Department of Conservation says Vicki Richmond has won an international Clearwater Award from a nonprofit educational group called The Waterfront Center. The award recognizes excellence and innovation in projects that teach the public about restoring urban water resources.

Richmond has coordinated Project Blue River Rescue and annual Missouri River cleanup events in the Kansas City area.

The department said in a news release that Richmond was given the award at the 2010 Urban Waterfronts Conference in Baltimore in November.

Richmond also works part-time for the state Conservation Department.
