Your Opinion: Social Security and its critics

Dear Editor:

Social Security is not a government welfare program. It is the government that has been sponging off Social Security.

It is funded separately from the federal income tax. The wage earner and the employer pay a separate tax of 12.6 percent a year and the wage earner cannot collect full benefits until he is 67.

Immediately critics say that it is also a disability insurance program. I say those who die before age 67 and never collect a dime more then offset it.

Social Security has bought trillions of dollars of treasury notes that Social Security critics now say are worthless. If that is the case let them tell that to the Chinese and other treasury bond holders.

Like Hitler said, the bigger the lie the longer it lingers.
