Comment period extended for St. Louis cleanup

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The public has another two months to comment on a report about the planned cleanup of a Superfund site in St. Louis.

The regional office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said it has issued the last extension for comment on the $26 million plan to clean up the long-vacant Carter Carburetor site. The factory closed more than 25 years ago.

The EPA said the comment period was to have expired at the end of November but has been extended until Jan. 31 because of a request from a neighborhood association. It's the second extension for the site, which the EPA says is contaminated with toxic chemicals, including asbestos. The plan details cleanup options.

The cleanup, expected to start next year, would include removing contaminants and demolishing buildings.
