WASHINGTON (AP) — Erving Walker scored 16 points to lead four Gators in double figures, and No. 18 Florida regained some footing Sunday with a 67-48 victory over American in the opening game of the BB&T Classic.

The Gators (6-2) took the lead for good midway through the first half as they bounced back from Wednesday’s lackluster loss to Central Florida, a defeat that has Florida in danger of dropping from The Associated Press poll after being ranked ninth in preseason.

Vernon Macklin, returning to the court where he played for two seasons with Georgetown before transferring to Florida, added 12 points. Alex Tyus scored 14 points, and Chandler Parsons had 13 points and eight rebounds.

The Gators shot 49 percent and overcame a scoreless afternoon from Kenny Boynton, who went 0 for 9 from the field and failed to score in double digits for the first time this season. Boynton, however, finished with a game-high seven assists.

Troy Brewer scored 17 points for American (5-3), which has dropped three in a row after opening with five straight wins.

Southern California 73, No. 19 Texas 56

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nikola Vucevic scored 16 of his career-high 24 points in the first half, powering Southern California to the upset.

The Trojans (5-4) led the entire way in their biggest win of the season, snapping a two-game skid in front of about 25 NBA scouts. Alex Stepheson added 14 points and 11 rebounds, Maurice Jones had 12 points and Marcus Simmons 11 for USC in the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series matchup.

J’Covan Brown led Texas with 17 points. Jordan Hamilton, from nearby Compton, was held to 12 points on 4-of-13 shooting, well off his average of 21.7 points. The Longhorns (6-2) came in averaging 78.6 points and had outscored their opponents by an average of 17.7.

But they were clearly riled by USC’s defensive pressure, with Simmons keeping Hamilton in check and the Trojans contesting shots while capitalizing on fast-break chances.

The Trojans opened the second half with a 14-3 run, including nine straight points, to build 49-30 lead.
