When Gary Pinkel took over as Missouri's head football coach, the Tigers had a four-game series scheduled against the Iowa Hawkeyes.

But Pinkel was trying to get the Missouri program on track, so it was decided to get out of the contract.

"I did my best to get them off, I call that intelligent scheduling," Pinkel said with a laugh Sunday night.

So after a few additional years of waiting, the Tigers (10-2) and Hawkeyes (7-5) will finally meet Dec. 28 in the Insight Bowl on the Arizona State campus in Tempe, Ariz. It will be the first meeting in 100 years between the programs from bordering states.

"We're honored to be invited to the Insight Bowl," Pinkel said.

The Insight Bowl was No. 4 in the Big 12 Conference selection order. Oklahoma, the conference champ, got the automatic bid to the Fiesta Bowl with its win Saturday night over Nebraska. Texas A&M already had been invited to the Cotton Bowl.

And after the Alamo Bowl, No. 3 in the order, took Oklahoma State, the Insight picked Missouri ahead of Nebraska. The Cornhuskers will go to the Holiday Bowl for the second straight season and will face the Washington Huskies, a team they already have beaten this season.
