Helias opens wrestling season by splitting duals

Twelve minutes of wrestling wasn't enough for Logan Gaines.

The Helias Crusaders waited until Friday to start the wrestling season with a triangular against Fort Zumwalt East and Warrensburg at Rackers Fieldhouse. Gaines, a junior, got in a little extra time.

"It's hard enough to have one overtime match, but to have two is extremely difficult, especially to start the season," Helias coach Travis Reinsch said. "He showed a lot of heart, a lot of character in winning matches against tough kids."

After winning his opener 7-6 against Fort Zumwalt East, Gaines won 10-5 against Warrensburg. Gaines led 5-3 as time wound down against Warrensburg's Jared Allnutt, but a reversal with :10 left sent the match to a one-minute overtime.

Gaines got a takedown and a set of back points in the final :05 for the win.

"Those two matches could send Logan to a big season," Reinsch said.

Gaines was one of four Crusaders to go 2-0 on Friday.

Dylan Linsenbardt won by fall at 112 pounds against Fort Zumwalt East, then captured a 10-0 decision when he dropped back to his normal 103-pound division.

"Dylan did a lot of good things over the summer and has been working hard in practice," Reinsch said. "And that showed in his results tonight."

Blake Wenzel won by technical fall and by fall at 130, while Ty Loethen won both of his 152-pound matches by fall.

Helias went 1-1 in the duals, beating Fort Zumwalt East (54-13) and falling to Warrensburg (51-19).

"It wasn't a bad night," Reinsch said. "We were putting things together against Fort Zumwalt East and we wrestled OK, not great, against Warrensburg.

"We saw some things we need to work on and we will. But nothing happened that we can't fix."
