Glass recycling service to begin Monday
Friday, December 3, 2010
Beginning Monday, Jefferson City residents will be able to drop off glass for recycling at two locations in the city with purple bins:
-1228 E. McCarty St. (Savea-Lot parking lot).
-722 Dix Road.
The Jefferson City Community Development Department has partnered with Ripple Glass of Kansas City to offer the free glass recycling service for Jefferson City residents.
Once the purple bins at both locations are full, the glass will be transported to a bunker on East Miller Street. Ripple Glass will transport the glass from the bunker to their recycling facility in Kansas City.
-What type of glass can be dropped off? All food and beverage containers of any color, including mason jars, can be dropped off at the two locations.
-What type of glass should not be dropped off? Windows, mirrors, cookware and dishes.
Glass does not have to be separated by color, and labels do not have to be removed.
Sponsors of the glass recycling project are: Xtreme Body and Paint, Fechtel Beverages, Allied Waste Services, Beth McGeorge Realty, Midwest Alliance for Renewable Energy, UMB, Hy-Vee, Missouri State Recycling Program and MRS (federal recycling).
For more information, contact the Community Development Department at 634-6410 or visit the city’s website at www.jeffcitymo.org.

Why doesn't Allied do this, especially since we are paying them twice as much money for half as much service these days?

Sorry, but the new Allied contract was for single stream recycling. Glas_s was not a recyclable item - it should have been. If there is a market for recycled glas_s, Allied should include it in the list of recyclable materials. Will continue to throw glas_s in the trash until then or put it in the recycle dumpster depending on mood at the time.
By the way, the cuss filter is stupid ! Please don't tell me to 'Watch my mouth' when I am not saying bad words such as gla_ss ! If you are going to get into blogs and webs, your staff should be able to program around such things. Between the filter and the Capcha, it makes it an onerous task to comment here. One does not have to do this on other media sites.

Sorry for the inconvenience. We asked the web hosting company to A) refine the filter to distinguish words from parts of words (also known as "working right"), and B) change that nag message to something more generic. They gave us an excuse why they wouldn't do B, and they're dragging their feet on A.

Might be time to write off that web host company and get one that can fulfill the N/T requirements and those of the readers that care to comment or retain internal staff to manage this function.

Already been researched and this was the best solution. This one truly is an improvement. I hasten to add that my definition of web hosting company means one that includes an extensive content management system geared for the news media. They do not come a dime a dozen. And hosting the same features yourself can be a mixed bag too. In this case, there are some rough edges that need work. Until those get tackled, hopefully everyone will grin and work around it.
