Cole County Circuit Court explains budget request

Cole County's circuit courts face more expenses next year, mainly because of two high-profile trials, Presiding Judge Pat Joyce told the three-member County Commission Tuesday.

Those cases involve Alyssa Bustamante, 16, charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in last October's killing of neighbor Elizabeth Olten, 9, near St. Martins, and the capital murder trial of David R. Hosier, 56, charged with last September's murders of Angie Gilpin and her estranged husband, Rodney Gilpin, in a hallway outside Angie's West High Street apartment.

Prosecutor Mark Richardson says he'll seek the death penalty if Hosier is convicted on the murder charges.

Joyce said most of the courts' extra costs comes in two areas: juries and marshals.
