Music venue has 'Mission'

At 915 E. High St., the name is the mission statement.

"We're on a mission to bring quality, live music to Jefferson City in a clean, safe environment," said Jenny Robben, coowner of the The Mission with her husband, Rich, and Eric Keeney.

The Mission has a slate of live acts for its opening weekend.

But that will be the rule, not the exception, at this new live-music venue on the East Side.

It's a venue for musicians set up by musicians that includes quality sound equipment operated by a full-time, trained sound technician, more than 100 old and new concert posters on the wall, and even a bar shaped like an eighth note.

"This is a music venue and we happen to sell alcohol," Jenny said. The location always has been a bar -- some may recognize the blonde brick building for its Stag Beer lighted sign.

Instead of serving food, they will have carry-out menus from nearby restaurants handy.

"When people walk in, they'll know it's about the music," Rich said. Like the triangle in the kitchen, The Mission's triangle is bar-stage-seating, he said.

The live music genres will range from blues to '80s rock to chamber music.

What will remain the same is the opportunity for local musicians to perform for an audience.

The Robbens will have a screening process for bands. But they welcome any musician or band to submit a demonstration recording to them.

Although they have opened quietly this week, the Robbens and Keeney hope to host a Grand Opening next month. The Mission will be open 4 p.m.-1 a.m., Tuesday through Saturday.

In the next few weeks, they will have performers including Automatic, Honey Bucket, Squigglefish, Tom Roe, Big John Amaro, Eric Avant, Jazz Dujour and the Baubeis Band.

Opening weekend: Form and Funktion will be on stage 9 p.m.-12:30 a.m. Friday. The Megan Boyer Band will perform 9 p.m.-12:30 a.m. Saturday.

" No good ol' rock and roll from the 60's or 70's? About all I can recall from the '80s was that electronica stuff, the hip-hop/rap stuff, and a few girl bands like the Go-Gos or the Bangles. "

" wow, Jefferson City has really been making strides lately. I hope this pans out.

I personally think it would be okay if there were some occasional "screaming stuff you hear from the young generation." But I think we're in fundamental agreement, fishing01. I prefer musical diversity too. Jazz, chamber music and rock and roll sounds like a great combination. "

" Just what Jefferson City needed! Love the atmosphere. I liked the comfy couches, chairs in the back room. I can't wait to hear some good bands there. Congrats to Rich and Jenny! Mission accomplished! "

" This is so cool! Please get some good music there. Jazz maybe??? Not this screaming stuff you hear from the young generation. Good luck, this is great. "
