Native American heritage event slated

The Missouri Department of Corrections is observing Native American Heritage Month at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the James C. Kirkpatrick State Information Center in Jefferson City.

Featured presenters include members of the Ioway Tribe of Kansas, the Kickapoo Tribe of Kansas and speakers Dona and Oran McKinney.

Dona McKinney's presentation "The Traditional Native American Family Structure" will explore the Native American concept of family. Oran McKinney's presentation, "Identifying and Understanding the Herbs/Plants Used in Traditional Ceremonies," will provide attendees with information needed to identify the herbs and plants used in Native American spiritual practices.

The event is free and open to the public.

" Anyone who can attend this event really should. It brings a new aspect to learning a new culture. Dona and Oran are great friends and great speakers. Theres also a powwow held in May over Memorial Day weekend that they help put on so if you cant go to this please mark that weekend to come join us for the powwow. "
