Missouri Boatworks handcrafts watercraft

Drew Lemberger, a Rocheport resident and avid outdoorsman, said he started building his own boats "out of necessity" about 10 years ago when he couldn't find what he was searching for on the commercial market.

Although fiberglass and aluminum boats are ubiquitous in Missouri, Lemberger was searching for the perfect wooden boat to offer guided tours on the Missouri River.

"I wanted something comfortable, quiet and, frankly, more affordable" than what he could readily find, he said.

Today, Lemberger constructs customized "task-specific" wooden boats for upscale clients and renovates older wooden boats. Over the last decade, he's built -- by hand -- racing kayaks, drift boats for fly-fishing, off-shore dories, duckhunting vessels and row boats. Recently, he's been commissioned to build a 35-foot cabin cruiser.

He works with his customers to discern exactly what they want. Clients choose what kind of wood is used and how it is varnished or painted. Lemberger said all the solid trim-wood is locally harvested.
