The script is written, meticulously placed backdrops are ready, microphones are checked and the countdown to broadcast is just as anticipated as one might imagine at a professional television studio.

No more than 50 eighth-graders will get to spend one semester of their school year learning how to record and edit news programs for Lewis and Clark Middle School.

Those same students who edit and record the selections will take turns being the anchor, having a part in an entertainment selection and reading the lunch menu.

The students in Felicia Leslie's video-production class this semester have also produced a video for the National Middle School Association's Making a World of Difference video contest.

" Finally a story about teens doing something good in the community. But I have decided just from other forums boscoe is against media completely! "

" While the basics are important, these kids are learning hands on skills that will be useful to them throughout their life. Activities like this ENRICH the basic education and keep kids interested in school and learning. You hear all the time about kids who drop out not b/c it's too hard, but b/c they are bored to death. Sit in lecture classes all day every day for 7 hours and see how much you learn. It also teaches teamwork as they have to work together on this. Lots of life skills here, which are just as important as teaching the standard reading, writing, and arithmetic. "

" n fact, the article states (available with a paid subscription) that students need to pass a skills test at with at least an 85% before they get to do anything hands-on."

Cool. Thanks for the info. "

" Although they seem rather frivolous to we old-timers, this class teaches communication, writing and editing skills. In fact, the article states (available with a paid subscription) that students need to pass a skills test at with at least an 85% before they get to do anything hands-on.

There is more than one way to skin a cat--or teach. "

" I don't think having 25 other nations beating our kids at academic achievement is a good thing. The USA used to be a leader in the world. Now we are medeocre at best, but near 3rd world countries in many aspects.

Nothing to lift up and celebrate here. "

" If the students are doing a positive thing, lift them up. There are way too many other distractions to get their attention, that are not good for them. Hooray for the students. "

" I wonder if the students involved have to prove grade-level proficiency in each of the core academic areas before they are allowed to participate in this entertainment activity?

It may be a cute activity and lots of fun for the students, but why are nearly 20% dropping out before graduation, and why is the United States ranked #26 of the world's nations as in how our students achieve academically? Does this kind of stuff, as well as the prioritization of sports in our public schools take away from student learning of basic academic skills such as reading, writing, performing mathematic operations, etc.?

I don't know, but I don't think anyone else knows either. It isn't a priority. "

" Alright! What a wonderful story. Wonderful job to the teacher and students. "
