Ex-funeral home director admits mishandling bodies

Published: Tuesday, November 17, 2009 4:56 AM CST
COLUMBIA (AP) - A former Missouri funeral home director has pleaded guilty to intentionally giving three families the wrong cremated remains.Harold Warren Sr., 77, pleaded guilty Monday to three felony charges of unlawful merchandising practices. He faces four years in prison on each of the charges.

State prosecutors and Warren's defense lawyer asked a Boone County judge to waive prison time in exchange for four years of probation, a public apology from Warren, payment of nearly $3,000 in restitution to the three families and a promise to refrain from any future funeral-related employment.

Circuit Judge Gary Oxenhandler said he would consider the request. He also made it clear that Warren could still wind up behind bars.

" It's too bad two different funeral homes have run into trouble, one with the misuse of families and their deceased loved ones. and the other with the misuse of funds of the families. There should be such a reverence for the deceased that there would not be a reason or cause for this type of thing to happen. I'm sorry for the owners of those funeral homes that they did not have compassion enough for those families. One cannot misuse the public and not have consequenses. "
