Neighbors in city's historic district encourage one another to protect city's past

When Jill Hartke moved into her first home in the 1100 block of West Main Street, she had a love of history, an appreciation for the appearance of the neighborhood and a desire to walk to work in the Capitol district.

Since July, she has become familiar with her neighbors in the Lower Jefferson Conservation District. And new city signs for the first city ordinance-created conservation district have set apart this cozy little neighborhood stretching roughly from the water tower to the Y where Main Street meets High Street.

Visiting with neighbors, Hartke has learned about the history of the neighborhood, like the once impressive mansions on the north side.

But the newest resident also has heard the tales of how the district came to be formed, as a step to preserve the character of the streetscape.
